Despite NANS Intervention, DSA Extends Eviction Deadline to May 1

The Division of Student Affairs (D.S.A) of Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U), Ile-Ife, has extended the deadline earlier given to students to vacate the university-owned halls of residence till Friday, May 1, 2026, by 12 noon.

In an earlier release on the evening of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, DSA had directed students to vacate their hostels by 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The directive followed the decision of the university’s Senate that students should proceed on a three-week mid-semester break after protests over the transportation crisis and other welfare concerns.

However, in a new communication addressed to hall wardens on the 30th of April, after the university management met with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, DSA said enforcement of the quit notice had been relaxed till Friday, May 1, 2026, by 12 noon.

“As a mark of good gesture, arising from the management meeting with the leadership of NANS SouthWest Zone yesterday, it was decided that we may relax the enforcement of the Quit notice earlier communicated to the occupants of the halls of residence till Friday, by 12 noon,” the release added.

According to the Division, the extension was to allow students, especially those from distant places, enough time to prepare. “This is to allow for enough preparation time for students from distant places.”

At the meeting, NANS had demanded, among other things, the immediate restoration of hostel utilities across the halls of residence and the suspension of the abrupt eviction of students.

The new directive, however, still indicates that students are expected to vacate their halls of residence, despite NANS’ intervention and demands.

As of now, efforts to get further clarification from the DSA were unsuccessful. The Vice Dean, Dr. L.O. Olasunkanmi, said he was unable to comment and directed inquiries to the Dean. Attempts to reach the Dean, Professor J.A. Odedire was unsuccessful.
