UNIZIK Trains Lecturers, PG students on research capacity

Learning never ends even for lecturers, the vice-chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof Joseph Ahaneku, has said, stressing the importance of strengthening the capacity of lecturers for research.

Mr. Ahaneku, a professor, made the remark in his address at the opening ceremony of the second Postgraduate Research Workshop which took place at the university’s auditorium, yesterday.

He said that there is need for constant training and retraining of trainers of the university’s teaching staff as learning is a continuous process.

Citing  the prerequisites for good and effective research by lecturers and their students alike, he mentioned “well thought-out methodologies, plans and research goals”, and expressed optimism at the prospects of great improvement in various research processes employed by participants at the end of the workshop.

He added that by the time they are through with the workshop they would not remain the same.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the Institution’s School of Post-graduate studies, Ike Odimegwu, posited that carrying out research IS one of the fundamental functions of any university, and underscored the importance of constant training of researchers to bring them up to DATE with current global standards and best practices.

Calling for the annual workshop to be intensified and entrenched as a culture in the university, Mr. Odimegwu, a professor, encouraged participants to maximize the immense opportunities for capacity building offered by the workshop.

The workshop, which is organized by the School of Post-graduate studies, commenced today effectively and ends 2nd February 2018, with the first phase for lecturers and the second phase for post-graduate students.
