In Lagos State University, the Students’ Union election has become a hotbed of controversy following the declaration of winners from what was widely deemed an inconclusive election process. On the day of the vote, the Lagos State University Students Union Independent Electoral Committee (LASUSU IEC) directed that the election would have to be halted and continued the next day after they noted countless complaints of technical difficulties with the electronic voting system.
Unfortunately, the LASUSU IEC itself did not follow this directive, instead, it ended up declaring winners from the unfinished election process. This led to the 3 presidential candidates filing a joint petition to challenge the outcome of the election.
Below is the joint statement of the 3 presidential candidates in the election:
*Being A Joint Statement Of OmOmeewa, Boko Halal & Synergy, Presidential Candidates at the Just Concluded LASUSU Election On The State Of The Election.*
Ever Koni Gba Lasuites.
Following the declaration of winners for the LASUSU Students Executive Council 18/19 election by the LASUSU-IEC from an inconclusive process, many Lasuites have since then been asking questions, questions such as; Is this how we will watch and allow illegality to prevail over our union affairs? Are we not going to do anything about it? and so on…
We wish to reiterate our interest for peace & justice. We shall seek to achieve justice through all democratic avenues provided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that of Lagos State University Students Union. We have seen so much efforts from all quarters trying to intimidate us into silence. But we have chosen to be firm and to seek justice not because of ourselves but because we want to avoid bad precedence in the history of our union.
Our Nigeria State is in the state where inconclusive election is the order of the day, and our union is a microcosm of the Nigerian State, if we must get it right at the larger society, we must get it right from here.
As things stand now, our petition is before the Election Petition Tribunal Committee. We have chosen to put the *Integrity* of the petition committee to test. We have filed a *Motion of Notice and Order For Interim Injunction* before the petition committee and the committee has held that;
*I). The LASUSU-IEC shall make available to the counsel of the petitioners all documents used by the committee in the just concluded election before the Tribunal.*
*II). An order compelling the LASUSU-IEC to provide such other documents that are requested of them by the counsel to the petitioners.*
*III). An order directing LASUSU-IEC to maintain status quo on all activities pending the determination of the substantive suit.* (that is, no inauguration should be held)
We appeal to our supporters to continue to be peaceful and go by their normal activities. We have not lost control of the situation. We shall ensure that justice is not only done but justice is seen done by all Lasuites.
Aluta Continua…..Victoria Arserta
