My second month as a Next Gen intern with Ogene FM was significantly better than the first. This month, the Head of Programmes, Sabi Nwa, conducted training sessions on audience engagement, programme ownership, and effective radio show preparation. These sessions laid the foundation for me to confidently co-host the 414 Show, where we discuss trending global issues. I was initially nervous but I’ve now grown more comfortable with the mic, and I am gradually finding my voice on air.

I also collaborated with the news department to write news reports and I handled this task well–thanks to my writing background. Moreso, I had the chance to voice two scripts, which are currently in production. The progress I’ve made has been recognised by the Station Manager and I find this encouraging.

Another highlight was conducting a vox pop with my colleague, Angela, on women’s opinions about their husbands having side chicks while they still provide for their families. It was an engaging and interactive session, and I found the experience enjoyable.

Additionally, I succeeded in getting my investigative story on the fencing of Nwafor Orizu College of Education (NOCEN) published. Given Ogene FM’s limited online presence, I turned to external news organisations to ensure my stories reached a wider audience.

Lastly, I wrote and voiced a report on myths surrounding albinism. This was my first experience working on a radio production script, and I learnt valuable skills in voicing and script preparation.
