My Third Month Journey as a Techie at TechCabal through the CJID Next Gen Internship

Embarking on my three-month internship with TechCabal through the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID)’s Next Gen initiative has been an exhilarating chapter in my career as a tech journalist. As a journalist with enthusiasm for technology and innovation, being selected for this prestigious program felt like a golden opportunity to refine my storytelling skills and broaden my understanding of the African tech ecosystem.

From the outset, I was determined to soak up every experience, contribute meaningfully, and grow both professionally and personally. One of my most memorable achievements during the internship was writing a detailed story about how e-commerce platforms like Jumia, Konga, and Jiji are shaping Nigeria’s consumer behavior. This project was both challenging and rewarding. It demanded extensive research, interviews, and an analytical approach to understand how these platforms impact consumer choices. With guidance from my mentor, Ngozi, and support from the editorial team, I successfully published a piece that resonated with our audience. Seeing my byline on TechCabal’s website, a platform I deeply admire, was a moment of immense pride and motivation.

The internship also exposed me to the rigorous demands of Tech Journalism. I quickly learned that being a tech journalist goes beyond reporting news; it involves critically analyzing trends, understanding complex data, and translating technical jargon into relatable content. The feedback from my editors and colleagues helped me refine my writing, develop a sharper eye for detail, and hone my ability to craft engaging and insightful stories.

While I am proud of the strides I have made, I am aware that there is still much to learn. During my internship, I was encouraged to read more and expand my knowledge base, particularly in areas like venture capital, the dynamics of African startups, and the role of technology in solving societal challenges. These readings not only enhanced my writing but also deepened my understanding of the tech industry’s potential to drive transformation. This has inspired me to take on more ambitious projects and explore untold stories in the tech space.

As I reflect on my journey at TechCabal, I am filled with gratitude for the mentorship, exposure, and support I received. This experience has solidified my commitment to tech journalism and my aspiration to use storytelling as a tool to amplify the voices of African innovators.

I am excited about the future and look forward to contributing further to the discourse on technology in Africa while continuously growing as a journalist.
