Save Our Future, Frustrated Students Task Amosun As MKO Abiola Poly Converted To Varsity Remains Closed

The conversion of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to a university by Ogun State Government has brought uncertainties around the futures of the of the students enrolled for diploma programmes in the institution before the conversion.

With the conversion, CAMPUS REPORTER learnt, authorities, in August, asked members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics chapter in the school to re-apply for jobs.

But that was rejected by the academic staff, leading to industrial disharmony and, in effect, cessation of academic of activities for both staff and the students.

At the beginning of October, the affected students and graduates had marched to the office of Governor Ibikunle Amosun in Abeokuta, to express their frustration over the crisis rocking their school, which poses risk to their mobility.

Although Mr. Amosun, meeting with the protesting young men and women, assured of solution to the crisis, the students remain out of school, while the fates of final year students looking forward to NYSC mobilisation still hang in the balance more than a month after the Governor’s promise.

Consequently, the affected students have now resorted to using the social media to call authorities to act responsibly and safeguard their futures.

Championed by the Press Club of the school, they are using hashtag #SaveMapaoly to demand action.

“It’s been over two years I gained admission to the Great citadel of learning Moshood Abiola Polytechnic for a two years National Diploma Program. Shey dey want us to do ND3 ni? #SaveMapoly,” tweeted an affected student via @Olatubosun15.

Another one, Kehinde Oyenuga tasked Mr. Amosun to save “our future: “@Govsia Please save our future we are tired of staying at home, take MAUSTECH to ipokia #SaveMapoly.”

They invited authorities to realise the consequences of keeping them out of classes or blocking their mobility by not mobilising them for NYSC with tweets such as the following:

“@delemomodu @rotimipaseda @bukolasaraki @benmurraybruce don’t let us resort to street thieves, yahoo yahoo and drugs. all we want is quality education in MAPOLY #SaveMAPOLY”

“Are we going to watch the APC repeat another LAUTECH with MAPOLY? This is not an UPGRADE, you are KILLING MAPOLY! Our future is at stake!!! #saveMapoly @NGRPresident @NGRSenate.”

Moshood Hassan, a final year students of the institution lamented the inability to be mobilised with their counterparts in other schools for NYSC as the institution is yet to conduct their final examinations for them.

“While our counterparts in other schools are preparing for NYSC, MAPOLY final year students have been forced to watch gloomily from the sidelines as they await the winner of the SIA vs ASUP fight. Toying with the lives and careers of thousands is insensitive and barbaric. #SaveMapoly,” tweeted Mr. Hassan.

Another student, Ifedayo Ogunyemi, the immediate past president of Press club of the school challenged lawmakers and other political office holders from Ogun State to come to the rescue of the students; otherwise, they become idle and may be lured into crimes.
