LAUTECH reviews new fees regime

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has announced a slight review of the tuition fees to be paid by its students amid protests.

The university jointly owned by Oyo State and Osun State announced the development on Friday via a mail to the students, several after it had announced a more 100 per cent increment.

The mail reads: “This is to inform all students that after extensive and exhaustive consultations with stakeholders, the Governing Council has magnanimously directed that the tuition fees payable by all students with effect from the 2018/2019 Academic Session be reviewed as follow:

Indigenes of the Owner-States of Oyo and Osun (100-500-Level ): N140,000.00 per session

Non-indigenes (100-500-Level) : N170,000.00 per session

Please note that the resumption date for the 2018/2019 Harmattan Semester remains Monday, October 29, 2018.”

The institution had previously asked students who are indigenes of Oyo and Osun states to pay N200,000 and non-indigenes to pay N250,000. The hike faced opposition from students who protested in Osogbo and Ogbomoso.

Before the hike, the fees regime included N63,500 for returning students who are indigenes of Oyo and Osun states and N72,500 for non-indigenes.

The present 100 level students paid N120,000 for indigenes and N150,000 for non-indigenes as part of the resolution of the institution after the university strike that lasted for months.

Meanwhile, some students who spoke with CAMPUS REPORTER condemned the review.

“That’s not review, we want out tuition back to what it was before not adjustment,” said a student, Praise Adeleke. “Just yesterday, the presidency said it cannot afford N30,000 as minimum wage. Our parents cannot afford such. That’s why some of us are not in a private school.”
